Cirkeline og den usynlige tegner er filmen bag 1960ernes kendte børneunivers om Cirkeline - alter egoet for kvinden bag - den usynlige tegner og forfatter Hanne Hastrup.

I stoflige smalfilmsoptagelser, taktile komponerede detaljerige iscenesættelser og gennem kreativ brug af tegnefilmsuniversets analoge naturbilleder, rejser vi tilbage i tiden og oplever skabelsen af Cirkelineuniverset tilbage i 1960erne, ledsaget af fortællingen om de barske barndomsoplevelser, der førte til, at Hanne skabte en tryg verden af magiske alfer omkring sig, som blev lige så virkelige for hende som den rigtige verden.

Med Hannes forelskelse i animatoren Jannik Hastrup realiseres fantasien i en perlerække af Cirkelinefilm, og følger fortællingen om den gyldne periode i 1960erne, hvor Cirkelineuniverset blomstrer med Hanne og Janniks kærlighedshistorie, ægteskab og enestående kreative samarbejde. Samarbejdet og ægteskabet overlever dog ikke den brutale og politiske virkelighed, der trænger sig ind på det hyggelige, trygge fantasiunivers.

Cirkeline and the Invisible Drawer

Cirkeline and the Invisible Drawer delves into the well-known children's universe of Cirkeline from the 1960s. Cirkeline is the alter ego of the woman behind it all, the invisible drawer, and author Hanne Hastrup.

Through tangible small film recordings, tactfully composed detailed setups, and creatively using the analogue nature images of the animation universe, the film takes us back in time. We experience the creation of the Cirkeline universe in the 1960s, accompanied by the narrative of the harsh childhood experiences that led Hanne to create a safe world of magical elves around her, which became as real to her as the actual world.

Hanne's romantic involvement with the animator Jannik Hastrup brings fantasy to life in a series of Cirkeline films. The story follows the golden period of the 1960s when the Cirkeline universe flourishes with Hanne and Jannik's love story, marriage, and exceptional creative collaboration. However, their collaboration and marriage do not withstand the harsh political reality that intrudes into the cozy, secure fantasy world.

As a prism narrative filtered through Hanne and Jannik's personal story and the thematic elements of the Cirkeline universe, addressing the idealism and upheaval of the 1960s, the film tells the story of society's significant changes in a crucial historical period. These changes break down gender roles and classical power structures. Through a magical universe, the film offers a fantastic musical tale about caring for each other, nature, and the climate, as well as teasing those in power and telling the story of real children.
